Silver Don Cameron

A friend of mine, Walter Rawl asked me if his friend could put in at our dock in Hampton for repairs to his sail. He said that his friend, Silver Don Cameron and his wife Marge were sailing to Florida from D'Escousse, Nova Scotia. Sailors are welcomed in Hampton Creek, especially at mine and Susan's place in Georgetown. The year was 2004. A few days later, a voice with a Canadian accent crackled across the VHF radio on Falcon. The seafarer identified himself as, Silver Don and he was in the Northern Part of the Chesapeake Bay and would arrive in Hampton the next day. He had ripped his working jib on the thirty three foot Norwegian built ketch named Magnus. He asked me how he could recognize the pier - Falcon was moored at the end slip and I had hoisted the maple leaf flag of Canada for easy recognition. The adventure began for us and a wonderful friendship. A book resulted from their adventure: Sailing Away from Winter - http://www.amazon.com/Sailing-Away-Winter-Cruise-Florida/dp/077101841X
In the book, there is a recount of their visit to Hampton. Susan and I were blown away to see our names in print.
I was very complimented by Don using my photograph of Magnus sailing away from Hampton to grace the cover - other photos are used within the book as well. Don has written many books, articles, etc. and a columnist for the Sunday Herald (Halifax). Marge is truly a remarkable person - writer and musician, with a contagious laugh.
